Taw Velo has a range of regular club rides with different speeds, distances and routes. New members are always welcome. Membership of the club is required to take part in the club rides but you are more than welcome to come and meet us first and try a few rides before you join. Please see our Membership page for details. The following rides take place regularly, any changes are posted on our Facebook page.
We meet at 09:00 at The Bike Shed Café, The Square, Barnstaple for a 09:15 departure. As a guide, we tend to do rides of 40 to 50 miles with an average speed of 13 to 15 mph and decide where to go on the day. Sometimes the group will split depending on the numbers or if some members want to ride at a different pace. We always stop for coffee and cake en route! The first Sunday of each month is an introductory ride where the route is predetermined so riders know what to expect; descriptions of these routes can be found here.
We meet at 18:15 at The Bike Shed Café, The Square, Barnstaple. This ride is for more experienced riders and has a faster pace, covering about 30 to 40 miles, with an average speed of 18 to 20 mph. A good chance to practice group riding skills with some sprints in between for the competitive among you!
We meet at 18:15 at The Bike Shed Café, The Square, Barnstaple. This ride is generally about 30 miles with an average speed of 17 to 18 mph. A brisk training ride, but a more relaxed than the Tuesday evening ride.
If you are unsure about joining a ride, don’t hesitate to email us email@example.com. Many people worry about whether they will be able to keep up on their first club ride. Hopefully the descriptions above will give you a guide; the weekend rides are the most steady paced rides and good for your first outing with us. We want to encourage people to enjoy riding their bike and the group will always wait for riders and re-group at appropriate points along the way. Remember that it is easier riding in a group, and there are coffee stops for refueling!
Helmets are required for all club rides. No helmet = no ride. You will need a reliable, roadworthy bike. The majority of riders use a road bike, but you will be able to do the weekend rides on a light hybrid bike with slick tyres. For the faster Tuesday and Thursday evening rides a road bike is generally required. Please ensure that you are dressed appropriately for the expected conditions and bear in mind that some rides will take us up onto Exmoor. Layers are a good choice and you can store a waterproof jacket in a jersey pocket.
Your safety and that of other members and road users is of paramount importance when you ride with Taw Velo. We have a code of conduct that all members are expected to abide by. Riders are reminded that they are representing the club, and cycling in general, when out on a club ride. Riders under the age of 18 can join club rides only if accompanied by a parent/guardian or a nominated adult assuming parental responsibility for them.
Taw Velo members can use our club Facebook group to keep in touch and to discuss rides. Feel free to find us and see what we’ve got planned.
